Inter-congregation Sustainable Agriculture Programme (ICSAP)

Background Information

The inter-congregation Sustainable Agriculture programme (ICSAP) is an initiative of six International religious congregations established in 2016 that works with vulnerable households in three (3) Eastern African countries; KENYA, UGANDA AND SOUTH SUDAN.

The six congregations involved and who are founders of this initiative are the; Daughters of Charity, Patrician Brothers, Salesian Sisters, Franciscan Brothers OSF, The Jesuits and the Spiritan Fathers. The initiative started first as a pilot project in September 2016 with the kind financial support of Misean Cara (MC) an Irish charity with the Oversight management of the Franciscan Brothhers as the Lead agency. In November 2018, an added member; the sacred Hearts sisters of Jesus & Mary (Mukono in Uganda), became the seventh founding member of the ICSAP partnership and network with one project site in Pabo in Gulu, Uganda. There are currently seven (7) International Religious congregation with a total of 9 implementation programme Projects sites spread as follows: 4 in kenya; 2 in Uganda and 3 in South Sudan

The following activities were carried out by the programme for the promotion of enhanched sustainable livelihood.

  • Capacity and capability building for 360 household heads in sustainable agriculture principles, practices and technologies
  • Capacity and capability building and restocking of small livestock production units (poultry, goats, sheep, pigs and bee keeping) with 360 households
  • Capacity and capability building of 35 acres of cereals production for household food and income security
  • Procurement and distribution of kitchen gardening inputs for 354 kitchen gardens
  • Construction and commissioning of 14 shallow water wells in Kitale project site benefiting 42 target households


Health and Hygiene



  • Establishment of household sanitation and hygiene enhancing facilities: dish rack, cloth lines; waste management pits and hand washing Tippy taps with 360 target household


Garden Fresh , Fruits and small livestock product


  • Capacity and capability building of 360 kitchen gardens with a varied of vegetables, fruits and some energy crops with 360 small holder households

  • Biodiversity\ Plant ( climate resilience) resilience
